PRIMARY TEETH

STAINLESS STEEL CROWNS (SSC)

A stainless steel crown is a strong, durable covering placed over a baby tooth to protect it from further damage and restore normal function.

WHY DOES MY CHILD NEED A CROWN?

  • Large cavities that cannot be repaired with a filling alone.
  • Teeth that have received pulp therapy (baby root canal).
  • Broken or weakened baby teeth.
  • To help maintain the tooth until it naturally falls out.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • The crown is silver-colored and made of medical-grade stainless steel.
  • Your child may notice the crown with their tongue for a few days.
  • Mild soreness or gum tenderness is normal after placement.
  • The crown is designed to stay in place until the baby tooth is naturally lost.

EATING & DRINKING

  • Avoid sticky foods such as caramel, taffy, and chewing gum whenever possible.
  • Encourage a healthy diet and limit sugary snacks and drinks.
  • Your child may resume normal eating once numbness has worn off.

ORAL CARE

  • Brush twice daily with a toothpaste that carries the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
  • Floss daily around the crown and neighboring teeth.
  • Continue regular dental checkups and cleanings.
  • Good oral hygiene helps prevent cavities around the crown.
